How O-3 connects to the principal applicant
The O-3 category is derivative of the principal O-1 or O-2 classification. Organize documents showing the qualifying family relationship and the principal applicant’s petition and visa or status information, as applicable. The consulate’s current instructions and your immigration team should determine the complete case-specific list.
Plan for each applicant
- A separate DS-160 confirmation for each family member
- Passport and photo requirements for each applicant
- Fee and appointment-profile steps required by the official service
- Relationship evidence relevant to the spouse or child
- Principal applicant’s petition receipt and supporting status or visa information
Parents, siblings and other relatives are not included merely because they travel with an O-1 applicant.
Why group size changes the slot search
A family of three needs appointment capacity for three applicants if attending together. One visible opening may therefore be unusable for the group. Before monitoring, decide whether the family must attend together and record only cities everyone can realistically attend.
If the principal and dependants will apply at different times, confirm the document and scheduling implications with qualified immigration counsel and the relevant consular instructions.
If the O-1 principal is already in the United States
An O-3 family member may be planning the consular appointment in India while the principal remains in the United States. In that situation, do not build the appointment request as if the principal is also attending. Record exactly which dependants need appointments and confirm the principal’s relevant petition, visa or status evidence with the immigration team.
List each O-3 applicant, completed DS-160s, realistic India locations and the family’s target travel window.
The principal’s US location does not make a reported slot bookable for the dependant’s profile. The official system still controls the options shown.
Can an O-3 visa last longer than the principal visa?
Department of State reciprocity guidance states that an O-3 visa’s validity may not exceed the validity of the principal applicant’s visa. Actual admission and status questions are separate; obtain case-specific legal advice where timing matters.
